Between the cotton field and your t-shirt sits a preparation step most buyers have never heard of. It quietly decides how the tee feels on day one and how it looks in month six. Combing is the difference between a fabric surface that prints like paper and one that prints like felt.
What combing actually removes
All cotton gets carded — cleaned and roughly aligned. Combing then drags the fibre through fine-toothed combs that strip out short fibres (up to ~15% of the material) and remaining impurities, leaving long fibres lying parallel. The yarn spun from them is smoother, stronger, and more even, and everything a buyer notices follows from that.

How it pairs with spinning
Combing prepares the fibre; spinning turns it into yarn. The market pairs them predictably: budget blanks are carded open-end; the premium standard is combed ring-spun. If your brand’s promise involves the words “soft”, “premium”, or “printed”, that’s your spec, and it costs far less than the retail difference it creates.
When carded is the right call
