Best countries to manufacture clothing in 2026: an honest comparison
By Santosh Rijal · Founder, Trishakti Apparel ·
Most “best country to manufacture clothing” articles are written by nobody in particular, compare nothing you can measure, and skip the origins that don’t buy ads. This one comes from a factory in one of the small origins the listicles ignore. That cuts both ways: we know this map first-hand, and we have to name the places where we lose business.
The comparison, all on one table
| Origin | Strengths | Watch out for | Typical knit MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | Unmatched capability, speed, fabric ecosystem | 12% EU/UK duty, US tariffs, rising cost | 500–2,000 |
| Bangladesh | Lowest prices at volume, duty-free EU/UK/Canada | 3,000+ minimums, long queues, audit gates | 3,000–10,000 |
| Vietnam | Quality, reliability, US-favoured | Duty-free EU only if origin rules met; costs rising | 1,000–5,000 |
| India | Fabric depth, now duty-free into the UK | 12% into the EU; wide quality variance | 1,000–5,000 |
| Pakistan | Knit/fleece value, GSP+ 0% into the EU | Energy and stability risks; GSP+ is conditional | 500–3,000 |
| Turkey | Speed to Europe (days), design-literate | 2–3× Asian prices | 300–1,000 |
| Portugal | Premium quality, EU-made label, tiny runs | The highest prices on this list | 100–500 |
| Nepal (us) | ~1,000-pc MOQ, 0% duty UK/EU/Canada/Japan, attention | Landlocked freight (+1–2 weeks), small industry, limited sublimation | ~1,000 |
The mistake the listicles make: ex-factory price ≠ landed cost
A $4.80 Chinese hoodie and a $5.20 Nepali hoodie land in the UK at roughly £5.90 vs £5.20 equivalent once 12% duty hits one and not the other. Duty, freight, and minimum-order cashflow are all part of the real price, which is why “cheapest country” questions have different answers for a US buyer, an EU buyer, and a Canadian buyer (whose MFN duty is 18%). The full duty maths by market.
How to actually choose
- Start from your real order size, the mega-hub price you can’t cashflow is not a price.
- Compute landed cost into your market, duty included, for two candidate origins.
- Match the origin’s speciality to your product: sublimated teamwear → Pakistan; premium EU-label → Portugal; knit basics at small-brand volume with duty-free access → the small LDC origins.
- De-risk: one origin is a strategy until it’s a single point of failure. The China-plus-one logic now applies to every hub. See our honest Pakistan comparison and Bangladesh/India comparison.
And where do we honestly fit? Knit basics and fleece, ~1,000 pieces per style, duty-free into the UK, EU, Canada and Japan, from a factory that answers in 24 hours, with sublimated teamwear and 10,000-piece commodity runs cheerfully referred elsewhere. Test the claim with one style.
